One year my husband and I traveled to New Mexico, through the beautiful Chama Valley area, then on to Durango, Colorado. One day while there we took a day-trip to Mesa Verde National Park in Southwest Colorado. We were very pleased we didn’t miss that opportunity. The archeological evidences of the civilizations, who called that area home, are astounding. Yet, the terrain, while lovely and dramatic, seems anything but hospitable.
In those days I used slide film to collect reference material for my painting and still have all of them. I’m one of those “studio artists”, meaning I prefer to paint indoors, in the air conditioned, bug free, atmosphere of my little workroom…complete with a sleeping cat or two for company. Other artists prefer “plein air”, painting outdoors directly. To each his own.
This is the second time I’ve painted this scene. I want to visit Mesa Verde again. Maybe next year.
This series of paintings have been a great variety which makes me anxious for next one. Do you plan for all 30 days or let each day speak to you?
Kathy, I wish I could answer that question with confidence, but I can’t. I like many different mediums; acrylic, watercolor, pen/ink, pencil and many different styles. My original plan for this 30 in 30 was to do abstracts, then I got off into graphic art, now I’m into a more representational style. My answer must be that I decide each day.
Wow, wow!!! Gorgeous. I love the look of your work so far on this 30 day challenge. It’s developing a unique style and beauty of it’s own. So nice!
I love you
Karen
Thanks, Karen. I guess that’s what painting every day is meant to do….develop skill in a distinct style. Love you, too. Enjoy your day and get well quickly.
